Hi, I'm Hannah and these are my top 10 reasons as to why I feel it is important to exercise during pregnancy. As a pregnant woman, your body goes through so much physically and mentally for those 9 months and so it's important to keep stress levels low and health high, for you and your baby's sake.

 

Gain Less Weight

Research shows you might put on up to 7 pounds less than pregnant women who don’t workout, while still staying within the healthy weight-gain range. By keeping in a healthy weight range it will help your overall pregnancy to have less problems.

Make your Birth Easier and Shorter

Having a strong core will help with your contractions and delivery, team this with a healthy cardiovascular system, your endurance for birth will be much higher. Research has found that among well- conditioned women who delivered vaginally, those who had continued training throughout their pregnancy experienced active labour for and average of 4 hours and 24 minutes compared with 6 hours and 22 minutes of those who did not. Imagine being able to meet your little bundle 2 hours earlier?1

Lower Your Gestational Risk of Diabetes

Research has shown that you can decrease your chances of developing Gestational Diabetes by as much as 27 percent if partaking in exercise while pregnant! High blood sugar during pregnancy puts you at extremely high risk for developing type II diabetes. This not only makes you gain more weight than usual but you will also be more likely to have a large baby with a risk of them getting diabetes later on in life. Exercise may help prevent or delay your need for insulin or other medications.

Helps You To Keep A Positive Mindset

Exercise releases endorphins which makes our serotonin levels increase, resulting in making us feel happier. This is a huge factor as to why exercise is so important. Doing this through your pregnancy will help calm any anxiety you may be feeling, becoming a mum can be very daunting for some women, and that's okay! It also helps decrease the chances of experiencig post-natal depression.

Prevent Morning Sickness, Swelling and Risk of Back and Hip Pain

An expectant mother's body goes through so many changes physically and emotionally. Exercising will strengthen your muscles surrounding your joints which will make you feel less achy. It will also help you to be aware of your posture throughout your pregnancy This will prevent problems with your joints, back and hips. I know the last thing you will probably want to do when you having that morning nausea is exercise, but facts show that even a walk can make you feel better.

It Will Calm Everything Down

When exercising, you are using breathing techniques which are transferrable to your labour to help you to calm your body down. Exercise can also calm your digestive system down and prevent constipation due to high progesterone of your growing uterus. Exercise, along with a high-fiber diet, keeps your digestive system working as it should.

You Have More Energy

Even though some days you will struggle to keep your eyes open, exercising can actually make you feel revitalised and can increase your energy levels! It can also make you sleep better at night in the later stages of pregnancy.

You're More Likely to Avoid a Forceps Delivery, C-section or Other Intervention

Women who exercise regularly during pregnancy are 75 per cent less likely to need a forceps delivery; 55 per cent less likely to have an epistiotomy and up to four times less likely to have a Cesarean section. This is due to increased endurance, muscle strength and helps to get your baby into the right fetal position ready for birth.

You're More Likely to Snap Back into Those Pre-baby Jeans Quicker

Muscle memory is a wonderful thing. Once your water retention has reduced, if you have exercised you'll see muscle definition come back a lot quicker if you have stayed active throughout your pregnancy. You are also less likely to hold on to cellulite! Keeping a positive body image is important post-natal as are likely to have gained weight in 9 months so don't be too hard on yourself.

You May be at Lower Risk for the No. 1 Cause of Premature Birth

Pre-eclampsia is a complication that involves high blood pressure and excess protein in the urine. About 5 percent to 8 percent of pregnant women develop it, and the numbers are growing. By exercising, it keeps high blood pressure at bay which means less chance of meeting your baby too early.
