With Self Love: Body Positivity

Body positivity has been a topic of much discussion over the last year. Why do we find ourselves critiquing elements of our body? Why do we get caught up in the compare game so much? Who is to blame for the insecurities we have been taught to believe are flaws in our physical make-up? With so many people with strong opinions on this subject, it is hard to know what to believe about how we should love ourselves and feel about our bodies. Here at Results with Lucy we promote self-love and body positivity at any age, size or ability!

What is Body Positivity?

The social movement of Body Positivity originates from a belief that everyone should possess a positive image of their physical body, as well as other people’s bodies. Body Positive advocates, aim to break down societal constructs of beauty and campaigns against any company or person who promotes specific standards of beauty as being more desirable, or better than another.

What does Body Positivity mean to you?

To you, body positivity is about accepting your body in the now. Embracing every single part of your body and thanking it for getting you this far in life. Body positivity is not a call to action for you to immediately want to stop progressing towards any health or fitness related goals you might have. It is a movement which says ‘accept and love where you are now, but if you want to make changes for a healthier future, then that is okay’.

How can you start introducing body positivity into your life?

Understand that we all come in different shapes and size. We are not genetically designed to all look the same. What makes us different from others, is what makes us so beautifully unique! There is nobody else on the planet that is exactly like you!

Change up your internal monologue. Be thankful, not hateful towards yourself. Rather than telling your body that you wish you had more defined muscles in your legs or that your arms are too jiggly; give thanks that your legs allow you to walk through life and your arms allow you to hold your nearest and dearest close in a hug. In addition to this, practising talking to yourself in a loving way. If you find yourself with negative thoughts about an aspect of your body – change it up! Replace it with a loving affirmation relating to something you love about your body!

Set goals based on health and fitness, not aesthetics. When we make goals based on wanting to change the way we look, we will never feel truly happy with ourselves until we reach the goal (and even then, many don’t feel the magic transformation into loving themselves when they do get there!). Instead, set goals based on health and overall feel-good-factor. If you approach your goals based on strength, energy and endurance; you are far more likely to reap secondary benefits such as weight loss and improved overall radiance.

Finally, stop putting your life on hold until you reach a magic number on a scale, or achieve a particular look for your body. Live your life in full, right here, right now. Enjoy making memories, focus on how you feel in the moment, not how you look. Life is for living, my friend, and when you are old, grey and sat in your rocking chair, I can guarantee that you won’t be regretting not spending more time trying to rid yourself of your perfect, imperfections…
