After all of the pancakes have been enjoyed on Shrove Tuesday (Pancake Day) 🥞, Lent arrives and provides us with an opportunity to take stock of our lives, and consider giving something up for 40 days.
Lent is a traditional celebration within the Christian ✝ calendar and is a time of self-examination and reflection. It lasts for 40 days and begins the day after pancake day (Ash Wednesday) and lasts until the day before Easter Sunday 🐥
Now you may have heard people saying around this time of year “What should I give up for Lent?” or “What are some good things to give up for Lent?”. Lent is fast-becoming a time for dispelling unhealthy habits and introducing new ones instead.
Here at Results with Lucy, we want to encourage women to make empowering and healthy decisions to help them live their best lives. So here is our list of some common and alternative ideas of what habits you could give up for Lent this year, and how you could replace them…
🚫 Don’t buy anything that you don’t NEED – how often do we find ourselves making mindless purchases and spending money that could be going into a savings account or donated to a cause close to our hearts instead?
💙 Donate 40 things for 40 days – if you haven’t used it or worn it in the past 30 days, and are unlikely to be using it in the next 30 days… donate it! Help someone else with the things taking up space in your home: clothes, books, DVDs, shoes, household items…
🤫 No gossiping – we are all guilty of getting our gossip on every now and again. However, for the next 40 days; if you didn’t see it with your own eyes or hear it with your own ears, don’t pass it on with your own lips. If someone is trying to get the gossip train to leave the station, try offering a compliment to the comments being made or not engage altogether
👄 Say 3 nice things to a different person each day – by spreading the love to others and seeing the joy you give to them by saying something nice, you will in-turn make yourself feel amazing too!
🍴 Replace eating out, for home cooked meals – 40 days of home cooked goodness? The feel-good factor would speak for itself!
📺 Replace 30 minutes of TV time for 30 minutes of self-care – How much time do you think you spend in front of the TV (while scrolling through your phone) on an evening after a long day? Replace this time with a mini pamper, a workout or a read of a good book instead!
😩 No complaining – it is way too easy to see the bad in a situation, rather than the good. But changing up your mindset is a great way to practice gratitude. Late for work because of traffic and now you have to stay later to make up the time? Be thankful you have a job to be late for, a lot of people who want a job, don’t have one. Why not start a gratitude journal to reflect more. It is easy to take what we have for granted. Commit to being truly grateful for at least one thing each day
🎞 Give up Netflix – are you a serial binge watcher with a bit of Netflix and chill? Give up Netflix for the next 40 days and replace that time with a different activity! Meal prep, a workout, pamper time, reading, crafting, walking are just a few suggestions! The world is your Netflix-free oyster!
🛏 No technology before bed or first thing in the morning - Turn your phone off 30 minutes before bed each night and reap the benefits of a much better sleep. Try to have no screen time upon waking as well. Imagine how much sooner you’ll be ready for work if you are spending less time scrolling through the ‘gram as soon as your eyes open in the morning!
👤 Less Facebook, more face (to face) TIME - take a technology break when seeing your friends. Really engage with them and keep a strict ‘no phones’ rule when with other people
⏰ Go to bed 30 minutes earlier and get up 30 mins earlier – don’t have time to workout on a morning? Wrong! Get to bed earlier, so you can wake up earlier and get some early morning yoga or other exercise done!
🍽 Try one new recipe every day for 40 days – we are continually updating the recipes available on our Eatwell Recipe Bank and with so much choice, it’s hard to find the time to try them all! So, what better excuse to try some new meals and recipes, than to try different ones every day for the next 40 days!
