6 Causes of a Bloated Belly? Common Reasons You Cannot Ignore!

Does your belly feel bloated every time you have a heavy meal? Gassiness, bloating and abdominal discomfort are all too common. In fact, studies have revealed that 70% of people in the UK experience bloating every day even when they do not have a large meal. More often than not, the reason for a constant bloated stomach is simple and straightforward. However, in some cases, there may be a more severe reason for feeling always bloated. Below are some of the primary causes of abdominal bloating that you should be aware of.

1) Gas can give you an over bloated belly

A sore bloated stomach may be the result of gas build-up in the intestines and stomach. Some common symptoms of this include nausea, excessive flatulence, excessive belching, and an urge to defecate. When intestinal gas causes a very bloated stomach, you may experience anywhere from a mild discomfort to sharp and intense pain.

Eating certain foods and indigestion are the leading causes of gas. However, a host of other ailments such as chronic illnesses, stomach infection, and Crohn's disease can also cause gas and a really bloated stomach.

2) Overeating can make your belly always bloated

When you think of a swollen bloated stomach, your mind may automatically go to Christmas dinner! We have all been there. Special occasions are when we throw caution to the wind and gorge on our favourite foods. Overeating is perhaps the most common reason behind feeling bloated for days. 

3) Food intolerance can cause stomach bloating

Typically, you can find out the cause of bloating by examining your food and water intake. However, what if you have not eaten too much? In that case, you may have eaten something wrong! Certain food intolerances can give you a bloated stomach for days. For example, some people cannot tolerate wheat products, gluten, spicy or acidic foods.

4) Fluid retention is often behind a permanently bloated stomach

A big bloated stomach may be a sign of fluid retention, which is often caused by salty foods. Even changes in hormone levels can cause your body to retain more fluids than usual. Some women also experience bloating during the early stages of pregnancy or before their period. However, bloating due to fluid retention may be caused by something severe such as kidney failure or diabetes.

5) SIBO or Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth may be why you are having a bloated stomach

As you may already know, the intestines and stomach are home to different bacteria, most of which aid in the proper digestion of foods. Sometimes, an imbalance can increase the amount of harmful bacteria in the small intestine. That is known as SIBO or Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. This condition can cause frequent diarrhoea and severe bloating.

6) Gastroparesis may be a reason for bloated stomach

It is a condition that prevents the stomach from emptying food normally. In this case, the stomach muscles cannot work properly, and as a result, food passes more slowly through the intestine and stomach. People affected with this disorder may always have a bloated stomach. They may also experience other symptoms such as heartburn, vomiting, nausea, discomfort, pain, constipation and loss of appetite.

So, next time you have bloated stomach problems, be sure to evaluate your eating and drinking habits. If the problem persists for long and without any apparent reason, consult with your general practitioner.
